Celebrating International Women’s Day

Celebrating International Women’s Day

At Leena + Lu, every day feels a little bit like International Women’s Day! As a modern sleepwear woman-owned business dedicated to ethical and sustainable practices, we take every opportunity to celebrate and empower women around the world. During this global event that highlights women’s achievements, we wanted to share our story, show our support and give an insider’s look at the values that drive us 365 days a year.

Founded by female entrepreneurs

We’re sisters, mothers to daughters, and entrepreneurs (usually in that order.) Kathya, with her background in engineering, never met a spreadsheet she didn’t like. Based in our home country of Peru, she works closely with our production team to acquire the organic Pima cotton in our modern women’s sleepwear and loungewear. Back in Atlanta, Ofelia is the creative brains behind this woman-owned business and chooses our designs, colors and styles — though she still lets little sister Kathya weigh in!

The way we bring different, yet complementary, skills to our business shows what incredible things can happen when women work together. We even named our company with a combination of our daughters’ names. As business owners and female entrepreneurs, we hope our company inspires our daughters to believe they can achieve anything they dream.

When we’re not running Leena + Lu, we love to support fellow women-owned businesses and brands. Send some love to our favorites:

  • Ursa Major: This clean beauty line inspired by the mountains and forests of Vermont harnesses the power of natural ingredients to fuel our sense of adventure.
  • Subset: Featuring organic undies for everyday, Knickey founders Cayla O'Connell Davis and Lauren Sagadore have made it their mission to reconnect consumers to their clothing through supply-chain transparency
  • Hapsy: The on-the-go CBD wellness products made by this female-founded company rooted in Atlanta help us manage daily work and parenting stress.

Supporting women in Peru

We use small factories in Peru that participate in Fair Trade regulations to produce our collections — and we're proud to partner with women-run factories that offer Peruvian women equitable wages, access and opportunity.

That means that each Leena + Lu design that you purchase not only brings comfort to the women in your life, it also helps women earn a living and support their families too. We believe in investing in the cotton farmers, factory owners and garment workers who are essential to bringing our sleepwear and loungewear to life.

In keeping with our pledge to sustainable production, we donate undergarments made from patterns cuttings of our organic Pima cotton to Casa Mantay, a safe home for girls in Cusco, Peru.

Making the planet a better place

According to the United Nations, women are more impacted by climate change. That means working for gender equality creates a more sustainable future. Our commitment to ethical practices, sustainable production, and social responsibility touches every part of our business, from sourcing to production to packaging. From using only eco-friendly dyes and organic Pima cotton to producing chemical-free small-batch collections and choosing compostable mailers, our sleepwear is designed to feel good — and do good, too.
